Some of the most useful storage ideas are built from very simple components. Wooden pegs, branches and hooks can create places for bags, keys, textiles and smaller accessories without adding bulky furniture.

Oversized wooden pegs can work as individual wall hooks. Mounted vertically, the opening of the peg can hold a loop, cord or lightweight textile. Several placed together create a flexible storage system while keeping the wall visually simple.

A wooden rail fitted with pegs is particularly useful for reusable shopping and produce bags. Mesh bags can hang separately, making them easy to reach before leaving the house and allowing them to dry properly after use.

Branches provide a less uniform alternative to a conventional coat rack. Choose a branch with a useful natural curve, clean and smooth the surface and attach small metal hooks along its length. It can then hold towels, bags or clothing in an entrance, bathroom or bedroom.

A smaller piece of driftwood can become a key holder. Add several small hooks underneath and suspend the branch from rope or cord. Keys remain visible and each hook can also hold lightweight accessories such as sunglasses or jewellery.

These ideas work particularly well in narrow spaces. A wall, the back of a door or a small section beside an entrance can provide useful storage without requiring a cabinet or freestanding rack.

Wooden pegs and branches also combine naturally with woven bags, linen, rope and other everyday materials, allowing practical storage to become part of the room rather than something that needs to be hidden.
