A well-shaped branch can become a useful object with only a few additions. Its natural bends, knots and changes in thickness provide forms that are difficult to reproduce in manufactured furniture and accessories.

For wall storage, a sturdy branch can be suspended horizontally with rope and combined with simple S-hooks. Towels, bags, kitchen utensils or lightweight accessories can then be hung directly from it. The same idea works in a bathroom, entrance, bedroom or kitchen.

Branches with natural side shoots are particularly useful for wall-mounted racks. Cut the smaller branches to suitable lengths so that they function as hooks, then attach the main branch securely to the wall. Leaving some of the original shape visible gives each rack a different arrangement.

A thinner branch can be turned into a clothes hanger. Adding a metal hook at the centre is enough to create the basic form. Slightly curved branches are particularly suitable because their shape already resembles the shoulders of a conventional hanger.

Larger pieces of timber can even become small furniture. A thick section of log provides a solid base for a stool or side table, while a simple upholstered top adds comfort and introduces a contrasting textile.

The finish depends on where the piece will be used. Bark can be retained for a rougher appearance or removed to reveal a smoother surface. Rough edges and areas that will be handled regularly should be sanded before use.

Choosing branches for their existing form is the key to these projects. Instead of forcing the wood into a standard shape, the natural structure determines what the finished object can become.
