A scarf can move easily between clothing, jewellery and headwear, making it one of the most adaptable accessories in a wardrobe.
Silk and lightweight cotton scarves are particularly versatile. Folded into a narrow band, they can be tied around the head, worn at the neck or wrapped around a ponytail. Larger versions can also work as a belt or be tied onto a bag.
Print gives the scarf much of its character. Paisley, geometric motifs, florals and vintage patterns can introduce several colours at once, which makes a scarf useful with otherwise simple clothing.
Worn as a headscarf, it works particularly well with jackets, shirts and relaxed tailoring. The combination creates a bohemian influence without requiring the entire outfit to follow the same style.
Scarves are also interesting pieces to collect second-hand. Vintage examples can have unusual prints, hand-rolled edges or fabrics that differ considerably from contemporary versions.
Because the styling can change while the accessory remains the same, a well-chosen scarf can stay relevant for years and move between seasons with very little effort.
