There is something useful about keeping a few pieces in your wardrobe that simply feel more dressed up than your everyday clothes.

They do not have to be reserved for weddings or formal events. A long skirt, an open-back top, a silk blouse or a pair of decorative heels can work for dinner, a birthday, a summer party or any occasion when jeans and sandals feel a little too casual.

Fabric makes much of the difference. Satin, silk, pleating and softly draped materials immediately give simple shapes a more refined appearance. Details such as bows, flowers and jewellery can then add personality without requiring a heavily styled outfit.

Separates are particularly practical. A full skirt can be worn with a simple top for one occasion and something more decorative for another. Statement shoes can do the same for dresses and trousers already in the wardrobe.

Bohemian occasion dressing works especially well this way. Instead of following a strict dress code, it combines feminine shapes, interesting fabrics and individual accessories in a way that still feels personal.
