Knitting has found its way into far more than the traditional winter jumper. Hats, scarves, bags, waistcoats and lightweight open-knit pieces have become useful parts of a modern bohemian wardrobe.

Chunky knits work particularly well for accessories. A ribbed beanie adds texture to a simple winter outfit, while knitted scarves and bags can introduce colour without dominating the rest of the look.

Lighter techniques extend knitwear into warmer seasons. Crochet and open stitches can be used for tops, dresses and cover-ups that work over swimwear or alongside linen and denim.

Handmade pieces are especially interesting because the choice of yarn, stitch and finish can make even a very simple design distinctive. Knitting is also increasingly connected to small-scale production, vintage patterns and the renewed interest in repairing or making clothes rather than constantly replacing them.

Even the smallest knitted piece can add something personal to a wardrobe, including, apparently, a very well-dressed dog.
