Built-in seating does not always need fitted upholstery. A long woven textile can cover the seat in one continuous piece and bring colour and pattern into an otherwise simple room.

This works particularly well on long benches and deep seating areas. Instead of making several separate seat cushions, one textile can follow the full length of the bench and visually connect the different sections.

Striped designs are useful for this because they emphasise the length of the seating. The pattern can introduce rust, brown, black or another accent colour while the walls and larger surfaces remain neutral.

The textile does not necessarily need to cover everything. Leaving part of the plastered or wooden base visible keeps the construction of the bench part of the interior.

A few plain cushions can then provide back support without competing with the pattern underneath. Picking one or two colours from the textile is enough to connect them.

This approach also makes it easier to change the room. A removable textile can be cleaned, replaced or exchanged for another design without altering the built-in seating itself.

It is a simple way to combine permanent architecture with something that can change over time.
