Linen has become one of the defining fabrics of Mediterranean summer dressing because its qualities are particularly suited to warm weather. Made from fibres of the flax plant, the fabric is breathable, lightweight and able to absorb moisture without feeling heavy against the skin.

The structure of linen also distinguishes it from smoother summer fabrics. Its fibres create the slightly irregular surface and natural creasing that have become part of its appearance. For summer clothing, this means garments can look relaxed without relying on oversized or particularly casual cuts.

Weight makes a considerable difference. The fabric is also versatile enough to move between different settings. Wide linen trousers can be worn with swimwear during the day and a blouse or jacket later, while a linen shirt works equally well over a swimsuit or as part of a more polished outfit.

Its place in Riviera fashion is therefore more than aesthetic. Linen combines the practical requirements of a Mediterranean climate with the relaxed tailoring that has become characteristic of summer dressing in the South of France.
