Few campfire snacks require as little preparation as s’mores. Marshmallows, chocolate and biscuits can be packed in minutes and assembled around the fire, which makes them particularly suited to camping trips, cabin weekends and evenings spent outside.

The classic version starts with a marshmallow toasted over the fire until the outside begins to brown and the centre becomes soft. Place it between two biscuits with a piece of chocolate and the heat from the marshmallow will start to melt the chocolate.

The type of biscuit can easily change the result. Graham crackers are traditionally used in North America, but digestive biscuits, shortbread or other firm biscuits work just as well. The important part is choosing something sturdy enough to hold the warm filling.

Chocolate is equally flexible. Milk chocolate gives the familiar sweet version, while dark chocolate makes the combination less sugary. Chocolate with nuts, caramel or sea salt can be used when you want something different without adding more ingredients.

There are several ways to toast the marshmallows. Long skewers are useful around a campfire, while a grill placed above the embers works well when preparing several at once. Turning them regularly helps toast the outside without immediately burning it.

S’mores are particularly easy to include at the end of an outdoor meal because almost everything can stay in its packaging until it is needed. Put the biscuits, chocolate and marshmallows on the table and everyone can make their own.

They also work beyond a traditional camping trip. A fire pit in the garden, an outdoor fireplace at a cabin or a designated fire area at a campsite can provide exactly the same setup.

As with any campfire activity, the location matters. Fires should only be lit where they are permitted and completely extinguished afterwards, particularly during dry periods when restrictions may be in place.

A bag of marshmallows, a few bars of chocolate and a packet of biscuits are enough to turn the end of an evening outside into dessert.
