The souks of Marrakech are a good place to look for pieces that still remind you of the city long after the trip is over. Instead of trying to see everything, it helps to know which objects are worth looking out for.

Textiles are an obvious starting point. Woven blankets, cushions, lightweight fabrics and embroidered pieces appear throughout the medina, with colours ranging from warm neutrals to deeper reds, greens and ochres.

Jewellery is another interesting category. Silver-toned pieces, engraved bracelets, beads and larger decorative designs can be found alongside more contemporary interpretations made by local designers.

For the home, ceramics, small bowls, trays, baskets and handwoven rugs are easy ways to bring some of Marrakech's character into an interior. Leather slippers and bags are also widely available, although quality can vary considerably between shops.

The most interesting purchases are usually the ones you would genuinely use or wear at home. A single well-chosen piece can become a much better reminder of Marrakech than a suitcase filled with souvenirs.
