One thing children and animals have in common is that they don't need much of a reason to do something simply because it is fun. As adults, we seem to become much more serious about how we spend our time.

Our days are organised around work, appointments, responsibilities and things that need to be finished. Even leisure time can become something we plan carefully.

That is probably why unexpected, slightly ridiculous moments are so enjoyable. A dog wearing something it clearly didn't choose, a child turning an ordinary walk into an adventure or an animal appearing somewhere unexpected can immediately change the mood of a day.

I think creativity works in a similar way. Some of the best ideas don't start with a serious plan. They come from experimenting, combining things that wouldn't normally go together or simply trying something to see what happens.

That is something I also recognise while working on Les Couleurs du Monde. Not every idea needs to begin with a strategy. A photograph, an unusual object, a conversation or something amusing encountered while travelling can be enough to start a completely new article or concept.

Being professional doesn't mean everything has to be serious. Keeping some curiosity and humour in what you do can be just as useful as having a plan.
