Small pieces of wood can provide an alternative to conventional photo frames. Their natural grain, irregular edges and different shapes make each display slightly different, while the photographs remain the main focus.

One option is to cut a branch into small blocks or thick slices. A photograph can be attached directly to the front, creating an individual piece that can be grouped with others on a wall. Using photographs in similar tones can bring some consistency to a larger collection.

Thicker sections of wood can also become freestanding photo holders. A narrow cut across the top is enough to hold a photograph, postcard or small print upright. These can be placed on a desk, shelf or bedside table and the image can easily be changed.

For an even simpler version, a small wooden slice can be fitted with a miniature peg. Photographs, notes, postcards or place cards can then be clipped into position instead of permanently attached.

The type of wood influences the finished object. Smooth pale timber creates a cleaner appearance, while bark, knots and visible growth rings introduce more texture. The surface can be sanded while leaving the outer edge relatively natural.

Different formats can also be combined. Wall-mounted blocks, freestanding holders and smaller clips can all use the same material while serving different purposes around the home.

It is a straightforward way to turn leftover branches and timber into useful objects while giving photographs and small memories a more individual presentation.
