Yin Yoga takes a very different approach from more active forms of yoga. Instead of moving continuously from one position to another, poses are held for longer periods and the body is given time to settle into each position.
A Yin class is usually built around seated or lying poses, with cushions, bolsters and blankets used for support. Because there is less emphasis on strength or speed, the practice can feel quite different from Vinyasa, Power Yoga or other movement-led classes.
The longer holds are one of its defining characteristics. They create time to work gradually with flexibility and mobility, particularly around areas such as the hips, legs and lower back. This slower pace also makes Yin Yoga popular alongside more active forms of exercise.
It can work particularly well on days between workouts, after travelling or when the body simply needs a gentler form of movement. A session does not have to replace other exercise but can become another option within a varied routine.
Yin Yoga is therefore less about how many poses you complete and more about spending longer in a smaller number of positions.
