Lace-up sandals combine a very simple form of footwear with almost endless possibilities in material, colour and detail.
The basic construction is straightforward: a flat sole is secured to the foot with straps or cords that can continue around the ankle or further up the leg. This makes the fastening an important part of the design rather than something that remains hidden.
Leather creates the most classic version, but woven straps, braided cords and textile bands can introduce colour and texture. Small additions such as beads, coins, pompons or embroidery can give the same basic sandal a more individual character.
The height of the lacing changes the look considerably. Ties kept around the ankle are easy to combine with long skirts and trousers, while cords wrapped higher around the leg become more visible with shorts, dresses and shorter hemlines.
Because the construction is relatively minimal, lace-up sandals work particularly well with the looser silhouettes found in bohemian wardrobes. Maxi dresses, wide skirts, linen trousers and beachwear can all be worn with the same pair.
Neutral leather remains versatile, while coloured cords and textile details provide an easy way to introduce smaller accents into a summer wardrobe.
