When colour is kept simple, the texture of a fabric becomes much more noticeable.

Cream, beige, ivory and other natural shades are common in bohemian clothing, but a neutral wardrobe does not have to consist of plain fabrics. Linen, loosely woven cotton, crochet, crinkled textiles and open knits can all create contrast within a similar colour palette.

Combining different surfaces is particularly effective. A coarse knit can sit alongside soft linen, while lace or crochet adds detail to a simple cotton dress. Fringe, raw edges and visible weaving can introduce another layer without adding print.

Fabric weight also helps separate pieces visually. A lightweight blouse worn with heavier woven trousers creates contrast even when both are almost the same colour.

This makes neutral clothing easy to layer. Pieces do not need to match exactly and subtle variations between cream, sand, stone and warm white can make an outfit more interesting.

Texture is particularly important in bohemian fashion because materials and construction can provide much of the character that other styles create through strong colour or pattern.
