Wooden furniture does not always need to be built from straight boards and perfectly identical parts. A section of trunk or a substantial piece of timber can become a stool, side table or bench while much of its original shape remains visible.

This works particularly well for smaller furniture. A solid wooden stool beside a sofa can double as a side table. In a bedroom, the same piece can replace a conventional bedside table, while several together can provide informal seating around a low table.

The irregularity is part of what makes these pieces useful in an interior. Tops do not have to be perfectly round and several stools do not need to be identical. Small differences in height, grain and shape can make a group more interesting.

Because the furniture already has a strong material presence, it usually needs little decoration around it. It can sit comfortably beside white walls, stone floors, linen and other simple finishes.

These pieces can also work well in areas where conventional furniture feels too formal. A wooden block beside a bath, on a covered terrace or in an entrance can provide a useful surface without requiring much space.

The finish can remain relatively simple. Keeping the grain, marks and natural variations visible allows the wood itself to provide most of the character.

Instead of shaping every piece of timber into the same standard form, furniture can sometimes start with the shape that is already there.
