A garden becomes more enjoyable when there are several reasons to spend time in it throughout the day. It can be somewhere to have breakfast, read in the shade, pick fruit, meet friends or simply take a break outside.

Shade is particularly valuable during warmer months. A mature tree can create a natural place for a chair or small table and makes the garden comfortable even during the middle of the day.

A permanent dining area is useful, but it does not need to be elaborate. A small table and a few chairs tucked into a quiet part of the garden can work for morning coffee, lunch or drinks later in the day.

Fruit trees and vines add another dimension. Grapes, figs, apples, pears and other fruit can provide shade as well as something to pick when in season. Even when the harvest is small, having edible plants makes the garden change throughout the year.

It is worth keeping a few things close at hand too. Blankets, cushions and table linen stored in a basket or cupboard near the garden make it easier to use outdoor spaces without carrying everything from the house each time.

Different areas can serve different purposes. A sunny spot may be better in spring, while a table beneath a tree becomes more useful during summer. A sheltered corner can remain comfortable later in the year when temperatures begin to fall.

There is no need to redesign an entire garden to use it more. Sometimes moving a table into the shade, adding somewhere comfortable to sit or planting something edible is enough to change how frequently you go outside.
