Water inside a home can change much more than the function of a room. A plunge pool, bathing basin or small indoor pool introduces reflection, movement and sound into the architecture and creates a place that is used differently from a conventional bathroom.

In warmer regions, bathing spaces have long been closely connected to daily life. Courtyards, hammams, pools and fountains place water within or alongside the home instead of separating it into a purely functional bathroom. Contemporary interiors are revisiting that relationship in a simpler way.

A small plunge pool can sit between living spaces, beside a bedroom or within a private courtyard. It does not need the scale of a swimming pool. Its purpose may simply be to cool down, sit in the water or create a quiet place at the beginning or end of the day.

Aged plaster, timber floors, stone and large openings towards a garden create a very different atmosphere from the polished surfaces normally associated with pools and spas. Natural light adds another dimension. Reflections move across walls and ceilings during the day and the surface changes with every movement in the water. Even a relatively small basin can therefore have a strong presence within a room.

There is also something interesting about giving water its own place in the architecture. Instead of adding another piece of furniture or decoration, the pool itself becomes the focal point. The surrounding space can remain remarkably simple.

This way of living is particularly relevant in riads, tropical houses, Mediterranean homes and remote retreats, where bathing can become connected to climate, architecture and the landscape outside.
