Combining two safari regions is one way to experience more of Kenya without turning the journey into a long road trip.
Mahali Mzuri lies in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, part of the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem. The area is known for its abundant wildlife and, during the migration season, the movement of large herds through the region. Days here can include game drives as well as time simply watching the landscape from the camp.
From the Maasai Mara, a short flight can take travellers south-east towards Tsavo and Finch Hattons. Set within Tsavo West National Park, the camp sits in a very different landscape, with volcanic hills, natural springs and views towards Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
Tsavo is particularly associated with elephants, including the famous red elephants whose colour comes from the park's iron-rich soil. This gives the second part of the journey a character quite different from the open plains of the Mara.
Staying in both regions also shows how varied a Kenyan safari can be. One trip can move from classic savannah and large concentrations of wildlife to a more rugged landscape shaped by springs, lava fields and the distant silhouette of Kilimanjaro.
