My daughter surprised me with an AI portrait of five of our dogs together on the beach. It immediately made me smile, especially because getting all five to sit like this for a real photograph would probably have been impossible.

What made the image particularly interesting was the possibility of bringing dogs from different moments in our lives together in one picture. Some are still with us, some have grown older and some are no longer here.

Of course, it is not a real photograph and that is also part of what makes it interesting. AI can now create personal images from photographs and descriptions, combining people, animals, places and memories in ways that traditional photography cannot.

The result does not need to replace the original photographs. For me, those remain much more valuable because they capture moments that actually happened. An AI portrait is something different: a creative way of bringing elements together that could never have been photographed at the same time.

There are plenty of discussions about AI and how it is changing photography, design and creative work. But sometimes its use can be much simpler and more personal.

In this case, it gave me an image of our dogs together that never existed, but that I am very happy to have.
