The historic centre of Saint-Tropez contains several churches and chapels that are easy to miss when exploring its narrow streets. Their towers and façades appear unexpectedly between houses, cafés and small squares.

The most recognisable is Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, the parish church whose ochre and sienna bell tower has become one of the visual landmarks of Saint-Tropez. Built in the Italian Baroque style, the present church dates largely from the 18th century.

Smaller religious buildings are scattered through the old centre too. The Chapelle de la Miséricorde, for example, can be recognised by its distinctive tiled dome rising above the surrounding streets. Built for the Brotherhood of Black Penitents, it is another reminder of the village's religious and architectural history.

Part of the interest comes from how these buildings are incorporated into Saint-Tropez today. They are surrounded by restaurant terraces, boutiques, homes and galleries rather than standing in a separate historic district.

The compact centre makes it easy to encounter several of them during the same walk. Start around the Vieux Port and continue through the old streets towards La Ponche and Place des Lices, looking above the façades as you go.

These buildings provide another way to understand Saint-Tropez before its beaches, fashion and international reputation became the images most closely associated with the village.
