Self care is much broader than skincare, spa treatments or taking time to relax. It includes the everyday choices that help us look after our body, energy and general wellbeing.

Some forms of self care are practical. Getting enough sleep, eating regularly, drinking enough water, moving throughout the day and spending time outdoors all belong to the same picture. They may seem less appealing than a spa day or a new beauty product, but they form much of the foundation of everyday wellbeing.

Beauty and body care can be part of this too. A morning skincare routine, washing and conditioning the hair, moisturising after a shower or taking care of hands and feet are small ways of paying attention to the body. These routines do not need to involve many products or take a long time to be useful.

Rest is another important part. Reading, having a quiet meal, taking a bath or putting a phone aside for a while can create a break from work and constant screen use. At other times, self care may mean doing the opposite and getting outside for a walk, swimming or choosing a more active way to spend an afternoon.

What someone needs can also change from day to day. After travelling, rest and hydration may be more useful. During a busy working week, movement and time outdoors may be missing. In winter, body and skincare routines may need adjusting to colder weather, while summer brings more attention to sun protection and hydration.

Self care therefore works best as a collection of ordinary habits rather than a separate wellness activity. Skincare, movement, food, rest and time outdoors can all have a place, depending on what is useful at that moment.
