An open weave gives bags and accessories a lighter structure while making the construction itself part of the design.
Unlike tightly woven baskets, open-weave bags leave visible spaces between the fibres. The technique can be created through knotting, looping or loose weaving and works particularly well with raffia, jute, hemp and other natural fibres.
The result is usually softer and less structured than a traditional basket bag. Irregularities in the fibres and weave can remain visible, particularly in handmade pieces, giving each bag a slightly different finish.
Simple details such as wooden buttons, leather handles or braided straps can provide reinforcement without covering the textile work. Neutral colours also allow the texture of the material to remain the main feature.
These bags combine naturally with loose cotton dresses, long skirts, denim and lightweight summer clothing. Their relaxed construction also makes them practical for beach days and travelling, as many can be folded relatively flat when not in use.
Open weaving shows how a simple construction technique can provide both function and decoration without requiring additional embellishment.
