Lighting is usually planned for practical reasons, but at a wedding or event it can also become an important part of the decoration. Large pendant lights, chandeliers and grouped lamps can help define a dining area, ceremony space or lounge without adding more decoration to tables and walls.
Natural materials work particularly well for outdoor and destination events. Beads, rope, woven fibres, wood and shells bring texture into the setting and combine easily with linen, ceramics, flowers and simple furniture. During the day, the fixtures remain visible as decorative objects. Once evening begins, they take on their second function as lighting.
Scale is important when choosing statement pieces. One small pendant can disappear above a long dining table, while several larger lights can visually connect the entire table. For smaller round tables or lounge areas, a single low-hanging fixture may be enough.
The height also changes the effect. Hanging lights relatively low above a dining table creates a more defined area, while higher installations work better above dance floors, entrances and spaces where guests need to move freely.
For weddings in marquees, pergolas, barns or covered terraces, existing beams and structures can often be used to suspend lighting. Temporary outdoor installations require more planning, particularly when electricity, wind and weather protection need to be considered.
Statement lighting can also reduce the need for additional styling. Instead of filling a venue with numerous decorative elements, a few carefully chosen fixtures can provide a strong visual feature while keeping the rest of the setting relatively simple.
After sunset, additional candles, table lamps or smaller light sources can complement the main fixtures. Combining several levels of light generally works better for a dinner or evening celebration than relying on one bright overhead source.
For an event that continues from afternoon into evening, lighting is therefore worth considering early in the styling process. The fixtures are part of the setting during daylight and become increasingly important as natural light disappears.
