Grimaud is one of the places around the Golfe de Saint-Tropez where the history of the region remains particularly visible. Long before Port Grimaud was created on the coast below, the original village developed on a hillside overlooking the surrounding countryside.
In the centre stands the Église Saint-Michel, built in the Romanesque style around the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. Its thick stone walls and simple architecture make it one of the most recognisable historic buildings in the village.
From here, continue through the old streets towards the higher part of Grimaud. Stone houses, small squares, fountains and narrow passages gradually lead towards the Château de Grimaud, whose ruins occupy one of the highest points above the village.
The climb is worth making for the views. From around the castle, you can look across the hills and vineyards towards the Golfe de Saint-Tropez. It also makes Grimaud an interesting place to understand the geography of the area, with the medieval village inland and the Mediterranean only a few kilometres away.
Allow time to wander back through the centre afterwards. Small galleries, terraces and local shops are scattered through the old streets, while temporary exhibitions and cultural events regularly bring contemporary elements into the historic surroundings.
Grimaud works particularly well as a half-day excursion from Saint-Tropez or Sainte-Maxime, and can easily be combined with Port Grimaud later in the day. Together, the two places show two completely different chapters in the story of the same commune.
