Port Grimaud is best explored slowly, combining its pedestrian streets with a view of the village from the water. Located in the commune of Grimaud, between Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez, it offers a very different experience from the historic hilltop village of Grimaud nearby.

Start around the centre of Port Grimaud, where narrow streets open onto small squares and canals. The houses were designed in a Provençal style, but no two façades are exactly alike. Pastel colours, tiled roofs, shutters, balconies and planted entrances give each section its own character.

Water is part of everyday life here. Many homes have their own mooring, making boats almost as common as cars elsewhere. Walking across the bridges gives changing views over the canals, but taking one of the small boats available in Port Grimaud gives a better idea of how extensively the waterways run through the village.

Stop for lunch or a coffee on one of the terraces overlooking the water. There are also small shops and places to pick up something for a picnic if you prefer to continue towards the beach.

The Église Saint-Michel is another interesting stop. Its relatively simple exterior fits naturally into the architecture of Port Grimaud, while its tower provides one of the recognisable landmarks of the village.

If you have more time, Port Grimaud is easy to combine with Grimaud village, Saint-Tropez or Sainte-Maxime. Regular boat connections across the Gulf can also make travelling by water an attractive alternative to driving during the busier months.
