Many of the rugs sold in Marrakech originate from different regions and communities across Morocco. Beni Ourain rugs are among the most recognisable, typically made from wool with a pale background and simple geometric motifs. Other Moroccan rugs use stronger colours, denser patterns or flatter weaving techniques.

Vintage pieces can look very different from newly made rugs. Their colours may have softened with age and small irregularities are common. Contemporary Moroccan designers are also working with traditional weaving techniques, creating rugs that fit easily into modern interiors.

If you are considering buying one, take time to compare several pieces. Look closely at the wool, weaving and finishing and ask where the rug was made. Dimensions are also worth checking carefully, particularly when the rug needs to fit a specific space at home.

Even without buying one, visiting a good carpet shop offers an interesting introduction to Moroccan textile traditions and to one of the crafts that remains highly visible throughout Marrakech.
