Layering Textures

A neutral interior does not need many colours to feel interesting. Combining different textures can create depth while keeping the overall palette calm.

Wool, woven fibres, thick rugs and soft cushions bring warmth to harder surfaces such as plaster, stone and timber. Each material has a different structure, which prevents similar neutral tones from blending into one flat surface.

Layering works particularly well with textiles. A rug can sit beneath another woven piece, cushions can combine different weaves and a sheepskin or heavy wool textile can add softness to seating or a bedroom.

Smaller objects can continue the same idea. Woven baskets, fabric-covered boxes and simple stone objects introduce texture without filling the room with decoration.

The result depends on variety rather than quantity. A few contrasting surfaces can give a restrained interior enough detail while allowing the individual materials to remain visible.
