I have always liked collections that look as though they have grown over time rather than being bought all at once. Cups are a good example.

Instead of twelve identical pieces, a cupboard can contain ceramics found while travelling, something bought at a local market, a favourite cup used every morning and pieces picked up simply because their shape or pattern was interesting.

The same approach works with plates, bowls, glasses and serving dishes. They don't need to match perfectly to work together. Repeating a colour, material or general style can be enough to create some consistency.

Travel makes these collections particularly interesting. Ceramics are relatively easy to find in markets and small shops around the world and styles can be very specific to a region. What begins as a practical object can also become a small reminder of where it came from.

I like this way of buying things because there is no need to complete a collection. You simply add something when you find a piece you genuinely like.

Eventually, the cupboard tells a much more interesting story than a perfectly matching set ever could.
