Table & Taste @saveursdumonde
A winter sharing table is an easy alternative to serving a formal meal, especially when friends arrive for drinks or an informal evening at home. Cheese, charcuterie, bread and a few seasonal additions can provide enough variety without requiring several separate courses.
Start with two or three cheeses with different textures. A firm aged cheese can sit alongside something softer and creamier, while a stronger cheese adds contrast. Charcuterie such as prosciutto, salami or smoked ham can then be arranged between them.
Winter fruit works particularly well on this type of table. Pears, apples and grapes can be served fresh, while figs, apricots and other dried fruits add sweetness. Walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds bring crunch and pair naturally with both cheese and cured meats.
Bread is worth treating as part of the selection rather than simply an accompaniment. A sliced country loaf, seeded crackers or warm focaccia give guests different options and make the table more substantial.
A few small additions can complete the spread: olives, chutney, honey, mustard or roasted vegetables. There is little advantage in including everything at once. A smaller selection of good ingredients usually makes a more appealing table.
Finish with something sweet served separately, such as a chocolate cake, pear tart or simple winter dessert. It turns an informal sharing board into an entire evening meal without much extra preparation.
