Small pieces of fabric are often too useful to throw away. Even when there is not enough material left for a cushion or larger project, scraps can still be used for small objects around the home.

One of the easiest options is to cover an existing object. A small box can be wrapped in fabric, a plain notebook can receive a textile cover and leftover material can be used around storage containers or small decorative pieces.

Strips of fabric are useful too. They can replace ribbon around a gift, be tied around napkins or used to hang lightweight decorations. Frayed edges do not always need to be hidden, particularly with linen and cotton where they can become part of the finish.

Small sewn shapes are another possibility. Boats, stars, trees or simple hanging decorations require very little fabric and allow different patterns to be combined within the same project.

For slightly larger remnants, making a small cushion cover, seat pad or fabric basket can use pieces that would otherwise remain stored in a drawer.

Keeping scraps grouped by colour can make them easier to reuse. Several different blue fabrics, for example, can work together even when the patterns and textures are not identical.

It is a simple way to use more of a textile once the main project is finished and to make small objects for the home from material already available.
