Ibiza changes surprisingly quickly once you leave the coast behind. Roads lead through pine forests, orchards and farmland, with old fincas scattered across the countryside and small villages appearing between the hills.

The traditional Ibizan finca is an important part of this landscape. These rural houses are recognisable by their whitewashed walls, simple shapes and thick stone construction. Many were originally connected to farming, with land surrounding the house used for growing fruit, olives and vegetables or keeping animals.

Today, some fincas remain private homes while others have become small hotels, restaurants and countryside retreats. Their rural setting has also created a very different experience of staying on Ibiza. Days can revolve around long breakfasts outside, local markets, walks through the countryside and dinners surrounded by fields rather than beach clubs.

The interiors and outdoor spaces tend to follow the character of the setting. Natural wood, woven materials, stone, linen and simple ceramics sit comfortably alongside shaded terraces and gardens filled with Mediterranean plants.

It is a side of Ibiza worth including in a trip, particularly for anyone who wants to understand the island away from its best-known beaches and nightlife.
