Textiles can bring Christmas into the home without relying on conventional ornaments and decorations. Wool, felt, linen and leftover fabrics can be used throughout an interior to introduce seasonal colour, pattern and texture.

Fabric ornaments are a simple example. Small stars, hearts and other shapes can be sewn from leftover pieces of material and finished with ribbon or string. Different fabrics can be combined to create individual pieces while maintaining a consistent colour palette.

Knitting provides another possibility. Wool can be used for small hanging decorations, stockings and soft ornaments that can return each winter. Using different stitches and natural wool colours adds variation without requiring additional decoration.

Embroidery can turn even a small piece of fabric into something personal. A word, date, initial or simple motif can be stitched onto linen or cotton and used as an ornament, gift tag or small decorative object.

Larger textiles can also change the seasonal character of a space. Wool cushions, blankets and sheepskins introduce additional warmth to seating areas, balconies and bedrooms during colder months.

Because many textile decorations can be repaired, adapted and reused, they can gradually become part of a family's Christmas collection rather than being replaced with new decorations every year.
